Caramel

Caramel
Get ready to see a charming feel-good movie when Layale (played by the Lebanese music video star Nadine Labaki, who has also written and directed the film) opens the doors of her beauty salon in Beirut. The scent of perfume is as abundant as the painful love stories in this colourful French-Lebanese chick flick about dreams, romance and, not least, friends. It is rarely a silent affair when women are seated in the hairdresser’s chair. The film’s intriguing whole is presented as a patchwork of stories about affairs, infidelity, broken hearts, virginity-restoration surgery and the fear of first wrinkles. There is even space for a short lesbian fling. But most of all, the portrayal of the five friends helping each other through the major and minor challenges of everyday life is both vigorous and liberating.
