This year’s competition films
When Copenhagen International Film Festival fades up for this year’s film event on 20 September, the audience can experience 147 fantastic films. 11 of them will get special attention, namely the films in competition, which compete for the six categories of the festival’s Golden Swan award.

Israeli film will play an important role at Copenhagen International Film Festival. This year, the festival’s competition series will feature the Israeli film The Band’s Visit, and the festival has decided to dedicate a whole series to Israeli film.

Thursday, 20 September:
The award-winning director Julian Schnabel will introduce his film The Diving Bell and the Butterfly at the festival’s Gala Opening ceremony on Thursday evening at 2100 hrs in Imperial. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, which earned Schnabel the Best Director award in Cannes, will be distributed in Denmark by Scanbox. Julian Schnabel is in Copenhagen from 20 to 22 September.

The jury member and producer Katinka Faragó is in Copenhagen from 20 to 30 September.

The French veteran actor Niels Arestrup (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly) will attend the opening ceremony and will introduce his directing debut The Candidate on Saturday, 22 September at 1630 hrs in Dagmar. He is in Copenhagen from 20 to 23 September.

Friday, 21 September:
The Oscar-nominated director and screenwriter Jim Sheridan will hold a Master Class in Dagmar from 1630 to 1830 hrs. One of the film projects he is currently working on is the American remake of Susanne Bier’s Brothers. Jim Sheridan is in Copenhagen from 20 to 23 September.

The German Dani Levy created a real media furore with his taboo-breaking film My Fuehrer – The Truly Truest Truth about Adolf Hitler, which ended up being Ulrich Mühe’s last film. Levy will introduce the film at 1900 hrs in CinemaxX and he is in Copenhagen from 20 to 22 September.

The Spanish director Felix Viscarret will introduce the competition film Under the Stars at 1900 hrs in Metropol together with the producer Alex Lafuente. Felix Viscarret is in Copenhagen from 20 to 24 September.

The jury member and film director Gillies Mackinnon is in Copenhagen from 21 to 30 September.

Saturday, 22 September:
Srdan Golubovic, the director of the competition film The Trap will introduce his film at 1900 hrs in Metropol together with the actor Dejan Cukic. Srdan Golubovic is in Copenhagen from 21 to 24 September.

Patrice Leconte will introduce My Best Friend at the festival’s French Day at 2130 hrs in Dagmar. My Best Friend will be distributed in Denmark by Sunrise Film Distribution. Patrice Leconte is in Copenhagen from 22 to 23 September.

The director Julie Gavras (the daughter of Costa Gavras) will introduce her debut feature Blame it on Fidel at the festival’s French Day at 1900 hrs in Dagmar. Julie Gavras is in Copenhagen from 21 to 23 September.

The Oscar-nominated screenwriter David Hare (The Hours) will hold a Master Class from 1400 to 1600 hrs in Cinemateket. He has most recently written the screenplay for The Reader, directed by Stephen Daldry and starring Nicole Kidman and Ralph Fiennes. David Hare is in Copenhagen from 21 to 23 September.

Sunday, 23 September:
The director of the Danish/Swedish co-production The Black Pimpernel, Ulf Hultberg, the producer Åsa Faringer and the actor Michael Nyqvist will be present at the screening of the film at 1630 hrs in Metropol. Ulf Hultberg and Michael Nyqvist are in Copenhagen from 21 to 24 September and 23 to 24 September respectively. The Black Pimpernel is distributed in Denmark by Nordisk Film Biografdistribution.

The director of Counterparts, Jan Bonny, will introduce the film at 1630 hrs in Dagmar at the festival’s German Day. Jan Bonny is in Copenhagen from 22 to 24 September.

The director Thomas Wendrich and the actor Alexander Beyer will introduce their film Maria am Wasser at 1900 hrs in Dagmar. They are both in Copenhagen from 23 to 25 September.

The director Ann Kristin Reyels, Hounds (Jagdhunde) (nominated for this year’s Alice Award) will introduce the film at 2130 hrs in Dagmar and is in Copenhagen from 23 to 24 September.

The actor Tuncel Kurtiz and the director Bent Hamer - both members of the jury at this year’s festival – are in Copenhagen from 23 to 30 September.

The Hungarian director Janos Szasz will introduce his award-winning Opium: Diary of a Madwoman, which stars Ulrich Thomsen in the lead role, at 2000 hrs in Empire Bio.

Monday, 24 September:
Eran Kolirin, the Israeli director of the competition film The Band’s Visit will introduce the film at 2130 hrs in Metropol. Eran Kolirin is in Copenhagen from 24 to 26 September. The film might be released in Denmark; the rights are currently with Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

Stefan Ruzowitsky, the director of the competition film The Counterfeiters (Die Fälscher) will introduce the film at 1900 hrs in Metropol. Stefan Ruzowitsky is in Copenhagen from 23 to 25 September. The film will be distributed in Denmark by Nordisk Film Biografdistribution.

Nadav Schirman, the director of the strongly debated documentary The Champagne Spy, will introduce the film at 1900 hrs in Cinemateket. Nadav Shirman is in Copenhagen from 24 to 27 September.

Laurent Tirard, the director and screenwriter of Molière will introduce the film at 2130 hrs in Park Bio. Laurent Tirard is in Copenhagen from 24 to 25 September. The film will be distributed in Denmark by Miracle Film Distribution.

Tuesday, 25 September:
Sam Garbarski, the director of the competition film Irina Palm will introduce the film at 1900 hrs in Metropol. Sam Gabarski is in Copenhagen from 25 to 27 September. The film will not – as previously announced – be distributed in Danish cinemas.

Ragnar Bragason, the director of Children, will introduce the film at 2130 hrs in Gloria and will furthermore participate at the Icelandic Evening on 26 September. Ragnar Bragason is in Copenhagen from 25 to 28 September. He is also the director of Parents, and both films will be distributed in Denmark by Øst For Paradis.

David Volach, the Israeli director of the award-winning My Father, My Lord, will introduce the film at the festival’s Israeli Evening at 2130 hrs in Park Bio.

Wednesday, 26 September:
The director of Hallam Foe, David Mackenzie, will introduce the film at 1900 hrs in Metropol. David Mackenzie is in Copenhagen from 25 to 28 September. The film will be distributed in Denmark by Nordisk Film Biografdistribution.

The French screenwriter Jean-Claude Carrière will hold a Master Class at 1400 to 1600 hrs in Cinemateket and is in Copenhagen from 26 to 27 September. Jean-Claude Carrière will be awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award at the screening of Volker Schlöndorff’s Ulzhan at 2130 hrs in Metropol.

Thursday, 27 September:
The British director Kenneth Branagh will introduce his latest film Sleuth at 2130 hrs in Dagmar. Kenneth Branagh is in Copenhagen from 27 to 28 September. The film will be distributed in Denmark by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

Friday, 28 September:
Marius Holst, the Norwegian director of the competition film Mirush will introduce the film at 1900 hrs in Metropol. Marius Holst is in Copenhagen from 28 to 30 September. Mirush will be distributed in Denmark by Sunrise Film Distribution.

Sean Ellis, the director of Cashback will introduce the film at 1900 hrs in Palads. Sean Ellis is in Copenhagen from 28 to 30 September. Cashback will be distributed in Denmark by Miracle Film Distribution.

Saturday, 29 September:
Gisli Ôrn Gardsson (Shooting Star, Berlin 2007) and Nina Dögg Filipursdottir – actors and co-writers of Parents - will introduce the film at 1430 hrs in Gloria.
They also both star in the competition film Children.
