In 2002, the journalist Daniel Pearl travelled to Pakistan to investigate the case of a terrorist who tried to smuggle explosives on board a flight from Paris to Miami. But Pearl was kidnapped and murdered. Michael Winterbottom has made a film based on the book by Pearl’s widow Mariane, which was written for there then still unborn son. The film grabs the audience by the scruff of the neck and only lets go when the last credits have rolled across the screen. The controversial English director has already dealt with globalisation and terrorism in the award-winning films In This World and The Road to Guantanamo. Together with Angelina Jolie, who has shed her more glamorous persona to portray the determined and impassioned woman, he completes an unofficial trilogy that is as talented as it is compelling.
