This year’s competition films
When Copenhagen International Film Festival fades up for this year’s film event on 20 September, the audience can experience 147 fantastic films. 11 of them will get special attention, namely the films in competition, which compete for the six categories of the festival’s Golden Swan award.

Persepolis manages to build a bridge between peoples and points out how similar we are, even if we live in a world marked by despotism and fundamentalism. When Marjane Satrapi published the first volume of her autobiographical cartoon seven years ago, she hardly dreamt that the story would travel around the world and end up on the big screen. The deft and thought-provoking stories, which show what it is like to grow up in an Iran transforming itself from Shahdom to a fundamentalist Islamic society, are universal despite their point of departure in a specific geographic location. And they are suffused with understated warmheartedness. Close attention is also paid to the Europe she is forced to escape to. In the spirit of the evocative line drawings and elegant humour of the original comic, this animation offers both delightful and intelligent entertainment.
