This year’s competition films
When Copenhagen International Film Festival fades up for this year’s film event on 20 September, the audience can experience 147 fantastic films. 11 of them will get special attention, namely the films in competition, which compete for the six categories of the festival’s Golden Swan award.

On Elba, in 1814, the young and idealistic schoolteacher Martino (Elio Germano) is pretty much the only person who is angry at the fact that the short French emperor Napoleon (Daniel Auteuil) has been exiled to their island. Martino believes in the ideals of the French Revolution and dreams of killing the emperor. He tries to forget about it all by seeking comfort in the arms of a baroness (Monica Bellucci), but when he is offered a job as Napoleon’s personal secretary, he suddenly gets the opportunity to fulfil his dream. But things don’t turn out quite as expected. Paolo Virzi has directed this film with a good dose of humour, and he prefers being entertaining rather than trying to drive home political messages. But he nonetheless offers a few sharp conclusions about the dangers of idolatry. Auteuil is perfect in the part of Napoleon, and the film is beautifully directed and filmed on locations in Elba.
