John Boorman does not paint a beautiful picture of Ireland in this intelligent and entertaining moral fable. The gap between rich and poor has never been bigger, nobody looks after the poor, and the pubs are filled to the brim with alcoholics and drug abusers. And a whole generation of people have deep and painful scars in their souls. Liam O’Leary (Brendan Gleeson) is a cynical entrepreneur, who, though from a poor background, is now part of the crème de la crème of Dublin’s business world. He has it all: a large car and house, a beautiful wife (Kim Cattrall from Sex and the City) and an intelligent rebellious teenage son (Brian Gleeson). But one day, to his great horror, he sees his Doppelgänger. Can only Liam see him, or is there an explanation? Soon, the skeletons come tumbling out of the closet, and the carpet is pulled from under the otherwise self-confident Liam. The lively and clever dialogue and a fantastic team of actors make the film Boorman’s best since The General.
John Boorman
Born 1933 in England. He was a film critic before he started making TV documentaries. His feature debut Having a Wild Weekend (1965) demonstrated his unique visual style, while the hard-boiled noir Point Blank (1967) underlined his talent. For Leo the Last (1970) he won the award for best director in Cannes, while Deliverance (1972) is a better example of his recurring theme of man versus nature. Excalibur (1981), Hope and Glory (1987) and The General (1998) have also won awards.
