This year’s competition films

Before I Forget provoked outrage at its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival this year, with both blowjobs and kinky sex games blown up onto the silver screen. But the entertaining dialogues and the worldly wisdom derived from a life lived in the homosexual fast lane are just as striking. Those who saw Venus earlier in the year know that it can be a highly amusing affair when two older men take stock of their lives and their desires -especially when they do so with an engaging sense of passion and irony. How, for example, does one go about ordering a blowjob together with ones takeaway pizza? Under the surface, however, life is dead serious - such as when death is spelled HIV. Jacques Nolot has not only written and directed the film, but he also plays the lead role. This gives the film an extra dimension, and makes it a thought-provoking and personal document about a man and his life.
