This year’s competition films
When Copenhagen International Film Festival fades up for this year’s film event on 20 September, the audience can experience 147 fantastic films. 11 of them will get special attention, namely the films in competition, which compete for the six categories of the festival’s Golden Swan award.

Last year, the Romanian filmmaker Corneliu Porumboiu won the Golden Swan for Best Film and Best Screenplay for his comedy 12:08 East of Bucharest. Radu Muntean uses a similarly humorous approach to look back at recent Romanian history. His drama, The Paper Will Be Blue, uses realistic means to portray the night between 22 and 23 December 1989, when Bucharest was thrown into complete chaos after the fall of Ceauşescu. A soldier involved in the fracas decides to desert his unit and join the fight to topple the totalitarian regime. His unit goes out to look for him, and we thus embark on a turbulent tour of the city in the chaotic night of the revolution, where it is hard to tell friend from foe. Romanian filmmaking is going through an exciting phase of development, and it is worth keeping an eye on Muntean.
