This year’s competition films
When Copenhagen International Film Festival fades up for this year’s film event on 20 September, the audience can experience 147 fantastic films. 11 of them will get special attention, namely the films in competition, which compete for the six categories of the festival’s Golden Swan award.

12-year-old Iska makes a living collecting trash from an enormous junkyard in Romania. The small change she gets for her hard work goes to her alcoholic parents and her little sister, who is ill. When her mother hits her one day for not taking enough money home with her, she decides to run away. She begins to live the life of a tramp, and ends up in an even worse situation than before. Iska’s Journey is a sad, harsh and uncomfortably realistic story. If it weren’t for Iska’s indefatigable dignity and her ability to pick up the pieces and continue, it would be unbearable. But it isn’t, and the film becomes a powerful, moving experience. An extra dimension of authenticity is added by the fact that the girl in the main role comes from a similar background. Iska’s Journey has deservedly won a number of awards.
