This year’s competition films
When Copenhagen International Film Festival fades up for this year’s film event on 20 September, the audience can experience 147 fantastic films. 11 of them will get special attention, namely the films in competition, which compete for the six categories of the festival’s Golden Swan award.

David Vorlach’s powerful, award-winning feature debut is set in Jerusalem’s Orthodox milieu. Here, a respected Rabbi lives together with his dutiful wife and their little son. They have become parents late in life and love their son above everything else in the world. But the father wants to make sure that all the rules about conduct are strictly adhered to, and that the son is introduced to the religious life, where one can always cite a relevant passage from the Torah. But for a small boy like Menahem the world is big and mysterious enough as it is, and concepts of life and death and higher forces are not so easy to grasp. It is easier for him just to look forward to the family’s upcoming trip to the Dead Sea. Everyday religious observance is portrayed in beautiful, quiet scenes, but the film ominously builds up to a shocking finale, which puts religious zeal in a new light.
Tuesday the 25th the director David Volach will introduce the film and answer questions from the audience after the screening. The Israeli embassy will offer a drink before the screening.
