This year’s competition films
When Copenhagen International Film Festival fades up for this year’s film event on 20 September, the audience can experience 147 fantastic films. 11 of them will get special attention, namely the films in competition, which compete for the six categories of the festival’s Golden Swan award.

The lives of four generations of a commonplace family are reflected the atmospheric feature debut by the brothers David and Tristan Ulloa. They all have their own secrets, find it as hard to cope with themselves as with each other, and advancing age does not make things easier. The youngest son, Sergio, has started seeing ghosts after possibly being responsible for his grandmother’s death. Marisa, a teenager, is sexually confused. The father doesn’t dare tell his family that he is mortally ill. The mother is desperate for attention. It might sound depressing, but the film is highly captivating thanks to its capable acting performances and a screenplay that slowly but surely builds up a strong element of emotional tension. The release does not come until the film’s final, cathartic scene. Thought-provoking, dark and realistic. Closer to Bergman than to Almodovar.
