This year’s competition films
When Copenhagen International Film Festival fades up for this year’s film event on 20 September, the audience can experience 147 fantastic films. 11 of them will get special attention, namely the films in competition, which compete for the six categories of the festival’s Golden Swan award.

Destiny, which has won a number of awards, is a minimalist, dark and glaringly realistic film about erotic obsessions and destinies that nobody would exchange for their own. The first, fateful moment, when Bekir sees Ugur in his father’s carpet shop, he is fascinated by her outspoken sexuality. He wants to have her, come what may - and ends up paying a high price. Ugur herself has lost her heart to a ruthless criminal, who is guilty of murder and is moved from one prison to another throughout Turkey. She follows him faithfully, even if she has to prostitute herself in order to survive en route. The tradition-bound Bekir, who is married with children, gets increasingly desperate in his pursuit of the beautiful Ugur. The minimalist director Zeki Demirkubuz strips away all the superfluous bits and sends his characters on a one-way trip to the end of the world.
