This year’s competition films
When Copenhagen International Film Festival fades up for this year’s film event on 20 September, the audience can experience 147 fantastic films. 11 of them will get special attention, namely the films in competition, which compete for the six categories of the festival’s Golden Swan award.

Sounds of Sand uses an ensemble of experienced African actors to tell this seductive yet ruthless fable about an East African family’s slim hopes of surviving drought and civil war. When the country village’s well dries up, Rahne, the local teacher, makes the difficult decision of travelling to more arable regions together. He sets off with his wife, two sons and bubbly little daughter Sascha, who was miraculously spared death when she was born. A nomadic journey ensues, during which both dehydration and cynical child soldiers on amphetamine threaten their lives, and Rahne is forced to witness helplessly how his family is gradually decimated. There are no short cuts to survival in the African desert, but Marion Hänsel’s film portrays the African tragedy in a story that, in spite of everything, has space for beauty and poetry.
The film is nominated for the Alice Award.
