This year’s competition films
When Copenhagen International Film Festival fades up for this year’s film event on 20 September, the audience can experience 147 fantastic films. 11 of them will get special attention, namely the films in competition, which compete for the six categories of the festival’s Golden Swan award.

André Téchiné has assembled a cast of attractive actors to make this powerful drama about a group of friends in the Paris of 1984. AIDS suddenly makes its appearance, and their lives are directly affected by the illness. The young and charming Manu causes concern amongst his friends by, at first, making the middle-aged doctor Adrien (played by Michel Blanc) fall madly in love with him, and then starting an affair with a police officer (Sami Bouajila from Days of Glory). The latter is married and has a small child with Sarah (Emanuelle Béart), an author of children’s books. When Manu discovers that he is HIV-positive, panic ensues among the friends. The doctor gets involved in the fight to find a cure, and the police officer becomes a nervous wreck as he waits for the results of his blood tests. The film describes, in an unsentimental way, how AIDS suddenly made its entry and influenced the lives of many different kinds of people. Téchiné probes with empathy into the lives and crises of the different characters in what his one of his best films to date.
André Téchiné
Born 1943 in France. He wrote for ’Cahiers du cinéma’ before making his debut as a director in 1970 with Pauline Is Leaving. His earlier films were very stylish psychological thrillers, while he later directed intimate human dramas, which often focused on the difficult choices of love. His films have been shown at all the large festivals and he won the award for best director in Cannes for Rendez-vous (1985). He was a guest at Copenhagen International Film Festival in 2005.
