This year’s competition films
When Copenhagen International Film Festival fades up for this year’s film event on 20 September, the audience can experience 147 fantastic films. 11 of them will get special attention, namely the films in competition, which compete for the six categories of the festival’s Golden Swan award.

England has a long-standing tradition of making hard-boiled gangster films, which make the American equivalents look like a trip to Disneyland. Paul Andrew Williams’s promising debut keeps up this tradition. In London to Brighton, two girls end up being desperate fugitives. Kelly is an experienced Cockney whore with an enormous black eye. She has the frightened 11-year-old Joanne in tow. They hop onto the early morning train to Brighton, with both Kelly’s pimp Derek and the psychotic gangster boss Stuart after them. The film paints a very bleak picture of Britain in the year 2006, and the glimpses of humour are pitch black. The director is closer to Mike Hodges (Get Carter) than Guy Ritchie (Snatch). The tough environment is depicted with eerie realism, and the hitherto unknown actors make a brilliant performance. This is not a film for tender souls. Williams eats Jane Austen for breakfast.
