This year’s competition films
When Copenhagen International Film Festival fades up for this year’s film event on 20 September, the audience can experience 147 fantastic films. 11 of them will get special attention, namely the films in competition, which compete for the six categories of the festival’s Golden Swan award.

Just when we thought that we have heard all the stories that can possibly be told about concentration camps during the Second World War, Stefan Ruzowitzky lights up an almost forgotten chapter: the Nazis’ effort to counterfeit foreign currency in historic proportions. Salomon Sorowitsch (Karl Markovics) is the uncrowned king of counterfeiting in the swinging Berlin of the 1930s, and it’s his profession, not his Jewish background, that makes him end up in the camps. But he is also an ice-cold survivor and curries the favour of guards by painting their portraits. In 1944, he is transferred to Sachsenhausen, where his special abilities give him a central role in the attempt to counterfeit British and, not least, American currency. The counterfeiting could potentially decide the outcome of the war, which leads another expert, the idealistic Adolf Burger (August Diehl), systematically to sabotage the process. The otherwise pragmatic Sorowitsch now faces a moral dilemma: should he do what he’s told or should he risk his own life to save others? Markovics is a real find as the main character - a performance that matches that of Ulrich Mühe in The Life of Others. The film, which is based on Adolf Burger’s memoirs, is a moving and untypical wartime drama, which follows Schindler’s List and The Pianist in the line-up of films that have something new to tell about this dark chapter in world history.
Stefan Ruzowitzky
Born 1961 in Vienna. He has directed for the theatre, television and radio, as well as for commercials and music videos, before he had his feature debut in 1996 with Tempo. He has since worked with different genres such as comedy (All the Queen’s Men) and horror (Anatomy I-II). He has also won a number of international awards for his film The Inheritors (1998).
Monday the 24th the director Stefan Ruzowitzky will introduce the film and answer questions from the audience after the screening.
