This year’s competition films
When Copenhagen International Film Festival fades up for this year’s film event on 20 September, the audience can experience 147 fantastic films. 11 of them will get special attention, namely the films in competition, which compete for the six categories of the festival’s Golden Swan award.

It can’t be pointed out enough times that war is pointless. But with last year’s renewed outbreak of the conflict between Israel and Lebanon, Joseph Cedar’s film is uncomfortably relevant. The film is based on a popular documentary book about an Israeli unit’s last posting in Southern Lebanon before the withdrawal in 2000. Beaufort is a war-film without heroes, and the enemy is never shown. The film focuses entirely on the soldiers, not on the war, and it is set exclusively in the medieval fortress, which has given the film its name. Here, the soldiers try to lead a life of some sort, but their powerlessness, stress and fear give rise to frustrations, which end up being as dangerous an enemy as the daily bombardments. The soldiers are isolated, without any moral support from their own compatriots, and the situation is reminiscent of what is happening in Iraq. The film won the award for best director at this year’s Berlin film festival.
