This year’s competition films
When Copenhagen International Film Festival fades up for this year’s film event on 20 September, the audience can experience 147 fantastic films. 11 of them will get special attention, namely the films in competition, which compete for the six categories of the festival’s Golden Swan award.

In the general public, Lech Walesa was the person to get most of the credit for the political inroads made as a result of the union strikes in 1981. Volker Schlöndorff argues that the crane operator Agnieszka (Katharina Thalbach) deserves an equally large share of acclaim. If not an even bigger one. This confident woman now has her own film, shot in Poland. The experienced actress Katharina Thalbach convincingly portrays the proud babushka, who firmly handles mice and men and Lech Walesa. Humour and music are a surprising but integral part of Strike, which refuses to succumb to stereotypical images of dereliction and moods of disillusion - thus avoiding the clichés of Eastern Europe as often seen through the eyes of the West. Jean-Michel Jarre’s soundtrack adds extra life to the film. Katharina Thalbach has worked with Schlöndorff ever since The Tin Drum.
Volker Schlöndorff
Born 1939 in Germany. He studied in Paris, before becoming an assistant of French directors such as Louis Malle and Alain Resnais. He had his own debut with Young Torless in 1966 and thus set off German cinema’s great comeback the following decade. He followed it up with a number of impressive films with political themes, which was favoured by both audiences and critics. In 1979, his adaptation of Günther Grass’s The Tin Drum won both the Golden Palm and an Oscar.
