This year’s competition films
When Copenhagen International Film Festival fades up for this year’s film event on 20 September, the audience can experience 147 fantastic films. 11 of them will get special attention, namely the films in competition, which compete for the six categories of the festival’s Golden Swan award.

The ageing patriarch Konraad announces that he intends to commit suicide on the one-year anniversary of his wife’s death. His children and grandchildren can either help him to make sure it is a dignified act or just leave him to look after it himself. This is the basic premise for this thought-provoking family drama, which shows how the widely different family members try to tackle the situation while simultaneously trying to keep their own chaotic families and lives under control and groping for love and understanding. In the manner of his award-winning film Guernsey, Nanouk Leopold again allows himself to move at a slow pace in establishing moods and situations, and the film lives as much from its silent moments as it does from its dialogues. The result is a fascinating mosaic of destinies, in which euthanasia - which is legal in the Netherlands - is only one of many complex issues.
