Hallam Foe Hallam Foe

|
This original story about the 17-year-old Hallam Foe is simultaneously a clever murder mystery, a touching love story and a warm comedy. But its premise is serious: Hallam’s mother has died, and he doesn’t think that she drowned by accident on his rich father’s estate in the Scottish Highlands. Instead, he suspects that his father’s new wife is responsible for her death, and his hatred for his surroundings makes him withdraw into his own dramatic fantasy world. He spends the days spying on people, while he mourns his mother and contemplates revenge. Hallam’s father, however, does not back his accusations. After a surprising confrontation with his stepmother, Hallam runs away from home. He travels to Edinburgh, where he finds a new purpose in life when he accidentally meets a woman who is the spitting image of his mother. She now becomes the object of his voyeurism, and Oedipus is lurking in the wings. David Mackenzie has previously worked together with the cinematographer Giles Nuttgens on Asylum and Young Adam, and for this film they have created a unique visual universe, where reality and fantasy melt together. The director avoids using genres and clichés, and the film thus ends up being both original and fresh in the way it approaches the exciting characters, the unorthodox narrative and the poetic tone, which is supported by the richly atmospheric music. Hallam is brilliantly played by Jamie Bell (Dear Wendy).
David Mackenzie
Born 1966 in Corbridge, Scotland. He has directed a number of shorts, with some of them starring his brother Alastair Mackenzie. He had his feature debut in 2002 with the low budget The Last Great Wilderness. He attained international recognition for his second film, Young Adam (2003), starring Ewan McGregor in the lead role.
Wednesday the 26th the director David Mackenzie will introduce the film and answer questions from the audience after the screening.
