This year’s competition films
When Copenhagen International Film Festival fades up for this year’s film event on 20 September, the audience can experience 147 fantastic films. 11 of them will get special attention, namely the films in competition, which compete for the six categories of the festival’s Golden Swan award.

The Croatian veteran Rajko Grlić’s latest film is an achievement on many fronts. Not only was Border Post the first real co-production between all the ex-Yugoslavian countries. It was also a solid hit in the cinemas in the entire region. The plot is set in 1987, before the outbreak of the war. A group of soldiers from mixed ethnic backgrounds are bored with military service at a sleepy outpost by the Albanian border. The unit’s young doctor is given the slightly embarrassing job of treating the lieutenant’s syphilis, and he sets off for the closest city to get medication. Here, he also has to deliver a message to the lieutenant’s neglected (and beautiful) wife. But no matter how funny, sweet and nostalgic the film sets out to be, dark and ominous clouds are looming on the horizon. Love, the fear of war and even syphilis are nothing compared with the storm that’s on its way.
